Demand for better Internet increases as UK adults spend a quarter of their waking day online.

With UK adults now spending more than a quarter of their waking day online – the highest on record – the need for ultra-fast, ultra-reliable connectivity has never been stronger.

That is according to Gigabit Networks, a ‘City Champion’ partner of CityFibre. Working together, the two are helping to transform the digital landscape for businesses across the Midlands, including in Coventry, by unlocking the power of Gigabit speed full fibre connectivity through CityFibre’s network – a £4bn investment to reach up to 8 million homes and businesses across the UK.

With businesses across the country now plunged into another lockdown, demand for high quality internet is at its highest ever.

According to the company, standard broadband relies on ageing and restrictive copper connections, which can often be slow. Full-fibre, which is being delivered across the area, overcomes these limitations to deliver a considerably improved and more reliable service.

Dan Ilett, CEO of Gigabit Networks, said: “Many of us had not heard of Zoom before the pandemic, but today it is virtually unthinkable to imagine doing business without it, or an alternative videotelephony platform, such as Microsoft Teams. But these apps are very bandwidth hungry and have put tremendous pressure on our existing broadband networks.”

Internet traffic from video conferencing apps has just exploded, Zoom had just 659,000 users in the UK in January last year and by April it had grown to a whopping 13 million and on top of that another 6.5 million people were using Microsoft Teams at the same time. Superior internet services delivered using full-fibre technology provides gigabit internet speeds, removing limits to communication and improving productivity.

“The last year has put into sharp focus just how important it is for businesses in Coventry and across the Midlands to have fast and solidly dependable connectivity which supports remote working, boosts productivity and sparks innovation, “ said Andrew Wilson, Head of Wholesale for CityFibre. “That’s why our work with Gigabit Networks in Coventry to achieve their full-fibre potential is so important,”

There is no doubt that Covid-19 has accelerated the adoption of online services to keep in touch. More than seven in 10 online adults in the UK are now making video calls on a weekly basis, up from 35% pre-lockdown. www.gigabitnetworks.co.uk
